Rio Azul is blessed with a pristine unspoilt estuary, making it ideal for a great bird watching experience.
Your bird watching holiday at Rio Azul can include a bird walk along the Rio Azul shores and in the surrounding bush of Rio Azul. Rio Azul also offers it’s guests boat rides on
the estuary where there are a large variety of common and exotic birds
The tranquil coastline of Rio Azul is home to many waders in the summer months and offers sightings of rare Crab Plovers and a huge variety of shorebirds including Grey Plover, Terek Sandpiper, Ringed Plover, Mongolian Plover, Bar-Tailed Godwit, Whimbrills etc.
The mangroves lining the estuary are home to Mangrove Kingfisher as well as a variety of other Kingfisher species. Osprey, Pelicans, Flamingo’s, Yellow Billed Storks, Woolly Necked Storks and Goliath Herons are frequently seen in and around the estuary.
Some of the special bird species encountered in the lodge environ and in the surrounding bush are: Madagascar Bee-eater (summer), Yellow Spotted Nicator, Pied Mannikin, Mozambique Batis, Lemon Breasted Canary, Grey Sunbird, Olive Headed Weaver, Green Coucal and White Throated Robin.
The lodge has bird books and binoculars available for guest use and among the management staff are keen birders who will happily lead an early morning bird walk.
Rio Azul is currently endeavouring to become part of the “Mozambique Bird Atlas Project” which is a project in collaboration with the “Endangered Wildlife Trust” to update information on local birds. To this end Rio Azul is currently compiling a list of birds sighted and we encourage our guests to note all and every existing and new sighting. All in all, Rio Azul is one of the most exciting and unspoilt birding destinations available on the sub-continent.
