Are you planning your honeymoon? If so, you might be interested in Rio Azul’s tips on planning a destination honeymoon. Read more now.

Planning a destination honeymoon is one of life’s most enjoyable activities, and if you are in the process of doing just this, then read further as this article will tell you everything you need to know!

What to consider when planning a destination honeymoon

1.  Consider what you and your partner like and match your destination with your expectations

The first step in planning your honeymoon is to have a frank and honest discussion about what you want out of the honeymoon.

Are you looking for a relaxings vacation in a warm climate with plenty of time to get to know each other better? Or would you prefer something more action-packed?

An effective way of determining the best kind of honeymoon for you and your partner is to write down a few favourites and then compare them.

2.  Do proper research before booking anything

There are many companies out there on the internet that will offer you the world, charge your credit card, and then fail to deliver when the time comes.

Thorough research is, therefore, essential and you should check the following before signing on the dotted line:

•   Previous customer reviews

•   Photos of the accommodation

•   Refund policy

•   Terms and conditions

3.  Define a budget for your honeymoon and consider unexpected expenses

Know how much money you have to spend on your honeymoon without having to go into debt. You may want to create a savings plan, whereby you put some money aside every month for your honeymoon.

Also, the total cost of the honeymoon might actually be more if you consider some of the most common, hidden expenses:

•   Travel insurance

•   Airport taxes

•   Flight delays

•   Drinks and food not included in your package

•   Shopping

•   Sightseeing

4.  Find out what documentation is required (visas, passports, COVID docs, vaccine docs, etc.) before booking your destination honeymoon

Thinking about travelling abroad? A honeymoon in Mozambique is always a wonderful idea but you will need to consider what documentation you’ll need beforehand.

Some of the most common ones include:

•   New passport (make sure yours is up to date)

•   Visas

•   Confirmation certificates for vaccines (Covid-19, Yellow Fever, etc)

5.  Research the available activities to see if it matches your requirements before deciding on a destination.

It’s important to think about what kind of activities you’d like to get involved in during your honeymoon. Some couples like to spend all day relaxing on the beach, in which case, a destination with a sandy tropical beach is ideal.

If you enjoy adrenaline-filled activities, such as water skiing or skydiving, do your research and find out if your resort can organise these activities for you.

There’s nothing worse than arriving, only to find out that there are no activities to suit your tastes!

6.  Plan your timeline and ensure you can take leave for this period.

If you are in the process of planning your destination honeymoon now, consider putting in leave as soon as possible so that your employer knows well in advance. They will be more likely to accommodate you if they know ahead of time.

You may also want to consider rescheduling important events or tasks so that they don’t coincide with your honeymoon period.

7.  Remember to book a day or two before going and after coming back. Leaving for your honeymoon on the wedding day or the day after might add unnecessary stress.

It’s understandable that you want to spend as much time as possible at your dream honeymoon destination but you will also need a little time to recover when you get back!

Even if you only factor in one day after arriving back, it can help you catch up on some sleep and get back into the swing of things.

Your wedding day is one of the most stressful and pressure-packed days of your life and leaving for a honeymoon on the same day is a recipe for disaster.

It won’t allow you to enjoy the big day as much because you’ll constantly be worrying about getting to the airport on time and you’ll be a bag of nerves. Leaving the next day or even in two days' time can help you to enjoy getting married and going on a honeymoon that much more.

8.  Consider the time of the year and the expected weather conditions

In places like Mozambique where the weather is great all year round, you won’t need to worry about arriving during a cold spell. However, if you plan on visiting somewhere that has high winter rainfall or extremely cold temperatures out of season, you may need to think twice.

9.  Make prior arrangements for special requests

Most resorts that cater to honeymooners are more than happy to accommodate special requests but it’s always worth checking beforehand.

At Rio Azul, we would love to hear from you if you have any special requests because we aim to make our guests have the best stay possible.

For example, you might be a vegetarian and worry that your resort might not cater to your dietary needs. You don’t want to arrive, only to be told that every meal will be a barbecue!

10. Go for an all-inclusive option

When you’re on your honeymoon, the last thing you want to worry about is where you’re going to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You also don’t want to worry about where to go for a cocktail or where the best spot is for lounging on the beach.

Choosing an all-inclusive option takes care of all these problems for you, and you pay one lump sum only.
